The New York Times published an article July 14, 2021 noting the largest single-year increase in drug deaths recorded. Authored by Josh Katz and Margot Sanger-Katz, the article states that several grim records were set in 2020: most drug overdose deaths in a year; most deaths from opioid overdoses; most overdose deaths from stimulants like methamphetamine; and the most deaths from the deadly class of synthetic opioids known as fentanyls.
